Quebec beer expert makes house calls

Thinking about how to surprise your partner with a special holiday dinner for two? Or perhaps you want to invite friends to a cheese tasting or dessert evening and can't think of what to serve?

The answer is beer.

"Quebecers have to start thinking outside the box of two-fours," says Raymond Beauchemin, author of Salut! The Quebec Microbrewery Beer Cookbook, who is now offering small-group beer tastings or cheese and dessert evenings.

"There's so much variety among Quebec beers in terms of style and taste," he says, "that just about any meal can be made with beer or served alongside it. And beer and cheese is as natural a pairing as wine and cheese."

But dessert and beer?

"Absolutely," says the author, who writes on beer occasionally for The Gazette and keeps a Web site at www.vehiculepress.com/salut/

"Name me a dessert and I'll pick a beer to go with it."

The events that Beauchemin is now offering are done in the participants' home, in the Montreal area, on Thursday or Friday evenings. The cost of $40 per person includes a copy of Salut! The Quebec Microbrewery Beer Cookbook for each participant.

Beer tastings, for up to 10 people, will involve sampling a number of Quebec beers, a talk about Quebec microbrewery history, and more sampling.

Cheese and dessert evenings, limited to groups of six, will include the pairing of four types of cheese with four types of beer; or in the case of the desserts, the preparation of a dessert made with and accompanied by a Quebec beer. Special chocolate and beer evenings will be available around Valentine's.

The talks are all about 90 minutes to 2 hours in length, and the cost of the cheese, or of dessert, is assumed by the client.
