YUUKAI JAPANESE FUSION
This seems to be the new “it” BYO restaurant for those Montrealers who have a penchant for sushi. It’s always busy and is perfect for a large group, with a room at the back and a huge rectangular table that fits up to sixteen people. The décor is simple, with sliding windows at the front that flood the room with Parc Avenue’s eclectic energy in the summer months. The service is charming and the food, varied and good. For those who don’t want sushi, or want to mix it up with a selection of starters, try the beef sashimi, the grilled calamari, the gyoza dumplings or the Japanese pizza. The warm mains include a seafood platter, chicken, beef teriyaki, grilled salmon (deliciously marinated but often overcooked) and the standard tempura options. The sushi is great for the price and the quality of fish and produce is definitely commendable. Desserts are limited but the green tea cheesecake always demands several spoons. Yuukai has quickly become a Japanese staple, and the fact that you can bring your own sake and Sapporo, not to mention the SAQ (liquor store) next door for refills, has made it all the more attractive for the younger hipster crowds.
