Evenings at Loose Ends
by Gérard Godin translated by Judith Cowan

OrŽe / First Light

This is the hour when the city coughs itself clear
and spits up a little blood
to open its bronchial passages
as daylight begins to take the place
of the fading neon
the hour when the city takes a deep breath
and begins another day without her

the taxis start up again
this is the hour when the city
looks into the mirror and counts its wrinkles
before shaving
the hour when the city
with its grizzled beard
says to itself yep there's been a frost
and this time summer
has really had it
this is the hour when the city burns its lips
with hot coffee
and hitches up its Police suspenders
over last week's shirt
this is the hour when the city
counts all the little girls
starting in Grade One
a few days before winter

this is the hour monsieur
when the city feels tired like you
and wonders for a moment
if maybe the time has come
this is the hour when the city
takes its time
before dashing madly
so as not to miss the bus
on a dark Monday
when it might be better
to say farewell to life

this is the hour when you find yourself alone
you too
like the city
as it unfolds for the day
there was once a time when we saw a lot of each other
at the hour when the city
still believed in you
